Norman and Jean Thomas would like to thank the racing teams of the Pilchers and the Bakers for showing up at Phenix City, Al. this past Sunday. In case some of you did not know, both of these racing teams were at the A.D.R.L. race in Rockingham, NC. on Saturday night. After the race on Saturday night both teams drove all night to get to Phenix City for the Dixie Promod Race Sunday afternoon. Die hard actions displayed by these teams is what you truly call real dedicated Dixie ProMod Racers.

Racers:

Jamie Hancock and Johnny Pilcher were getting ready to start-up their cars for their second round pass down the track. J.Pilcher had a switch that came loose on his car. Jamie Hancock had already pulled his car into the water box and was sitting there with his engine running. James Hancock, Jamie's father, looked over at the Pilcher's car and saw that pilcher was having a problem. James then told Jamie to shut the car off and proceeded to wait on J.Pilcher to fix his problem. Then, Jamie Hancock went on to loose that round of racing to J.Pilcher. All James and Jamie Hancock could say about the waiting for J.Pilcher to get his car running was that it was the right thing to do. James also said it was the right thing to do to put on a great show for all the fans who had come to watch the heads up side by side racing that the Dixie ProMods deliver.

AS J.PILCHER NEARED THE END OF THE TRACK HIS CAR BROKE A CONNECTING ROD AND HAD A LOT OF FLAMES IN THE HEADERS. HE PULLED HIS CAR OFF THE SIDE OF THE TRACK AS THE TRACK CREW MADE SURE THE FLAMES WERE PUT OUT.

THE LAST PAIR OUT IN THE 2ND ROUND WERE K.BAKER IN THE RIGHT LANE TAKING ON B.BAXLEY. BOTH DRIVERS LEFT AROUND THE SAME TIME WITH K.BAKER GETTING TO THE FINISH LINE FIRST RUNNING A WINNING E.T. OF 4.10@175.90 TO B.BAXLEY'S LOSING E.T. OF 4.25@147.58. B.BAXLEY DID A GREAT JOB OF DRIVING AS HIS CAR GOT SIDEWAYS ON THE TOP END AND HAD TO KEEP IT OUT OF BAKERS LANE. THE ONLY THING HIT WAS A SAFETY CONE.

THE FINALS WERE K.BAKER GOING INTO THE RIGHT LANE TAKING ON J.HANCOCK WHO WAS PUT BACK IN THE RACE DUE TO J.PILCHER'S ENGINE PROBLEMS. THIS WAS NOT J.HANCOCK'S NIGHT. HE LEFT THE STARTING LINE TO EARLY TO TURN ON THE RED LIGHT. THEN, HE GOT VERY LOSE. K.BAKER RAN A WINNING E.T. OF 4.24@144.65

1st Round of Elimination

First pair out on the track for the race were #4 qualifier J.Pilcher in the right lane taking on #5qualifier T.cagle. T.Cagle took the advantage off the starting line but did very little to help his self, because just after both drivers left they each had trouble right off the starting line and J.Pilcher was able to make it to the finish line first running a winning E.T of 4.65@118.70 to T.Cagle's losing E.T. of 13.24@ 30.63 mph.

The second pair out were # 3 qualifer J.Hancock in the right lane taking on # 6 Qualifier B.Baxley. J.Hancock took first off the tree and held on to take the win running a winning E.T. of 4.14@177.93 to a good but losing E.T. of 4:21@155.17 by B.Baxley

The third pair out were # 2 qualifier K.Baker in the right lane taking on the #7 qualifier J.Thomas. This round was over at the tree as K.Baker left the line to soon turning on the dreaded red light. Thus, giving the win to J.Thomas with a winning E.T. of 4:25@169.55mph to K.Baker's losing red light E.T. of 4:05@180.00mph

The final pair out were #1 qualifier D.Parker in the left lane going against #8 Qualifier R.Edelen. Both driver were almost even on the tree when they left the starting line. R.Edelen could not hold off D.Parker who ran aanother great winning E.T. of 4.02@182.85 to R.Edelen's losing E.T. of 4.25@162.45 mph

2nd Round of Elimination

The first pair out in the second round were J.Hancock with lane choice going into the right lane taking on J.Thomas. J.Hancock took the advantage off the tree and never looked back taking the win running a winning E.T. of 4.08@178.71 to J.Thomas' losing E.T. of 4.21@167.91 mph.

The last pair out in the second round were D.Parker with lane choice going to the left lane over J.Pilcher. J.Pilcher took the advantage on the tree but could not hold off D.Parker who ran another winning E.T. of 3.98@181.37 to J.Pilcher's losing E.T. of 4.29@140.18 mph.

Final Round

The final round would have been a good match up with D.Parker having lane choice going into the left lane. J.Hancock took the advantage on the tree; however, he could not hold off D.Parker. J.Hancock had tire shake problems around the 330 foot mark and had to shut down while D.Parker had another great winning run with an E.T. of 4.02

The First Pair out were the # 4 Qualifier E. Five Speed Hall taking on the # 5 qualifier R.Edlen. E.Five speed Hall took the tower side lane and R.Edlen took the outside lane. R.Edlen put a hole shot on E.Five Speed Hall and put the win light on in his lane first running a a winning E.T. of 4.24@ 169.02 to E.Five Speed Hall's faster but losing E.T of 4.23 @ 167.32.

The second pair up were the # 3 qualifier B.Baxley who went to the outside tower lane going against the # 6 qualifier P.Wallace in the tower side lane. B.Baxley went immediately into a tire shake and P.Wallace never looked back taking the win with a winning E.T. of 4.34 @ 160.11

The third pair out were #2 qualifier K.Baker taking the tower side lane and going up agianst on the # 7 qualifer Lynn Milner Baxley. K.Baker got out first on the starting line and took the win with a winning E.T. of 4. 15@ 173.81 to Lynn Milner Baxley's losing E.T. of 4:32@ 158.30

The last pair out in the first round were #1 qualifier J.Hancock taking the tower side lane and going up against the # 8 qualifier J.Thomas / Sandufer. J.Thomas / Sandufer got off the starting line first; however, J.Hancock had to much motor and brought home the win with a winning E.T. of 4.11@ 175.70 to J.Thomas / Sandufer's losing E.T. of 4.32@ 158.32

2nd Round of Elimination

The First pair out in the second round were K.Baker taking on P.Wallace. K.Baker who had lane choice went to the tower side lane. K.Baker took a hole shot on the tree and another great run with a winning E.T. of 4.24@ 164.32 to P.Wallace's losing E.T. of 4.46@ 136.27

The last pair out in the second round were J.Hancock with lane choice taking the tower side lane going against R.Edelen. Both drivers were dead even off the tree but J.Hancock ran another winning E.T. of 4.25@ 169.72 to R.Edelen's tire shaking losing E.T. of 7.06@ 69.33.

Final Round

The final round of the night saw the #1 qualifier and the #2 qualifier going up head to head. K.Baker had lane choice over J.Hancock. Without a doubt, this was the closest race of the night. J.Hancock took an advantage on the tree with a .471 blub to K.Baker's .491 light. J.Hancock took the win with a winng E.T. of 4.21@167.25 to K.Baker's losing E.T of 4.20@164.40. What a great race for the final run of the night.

I was not able to see the win but I saw your nitrous explosion during qualifying and the fire extinguishers spraying down the engine. I saw Wade Mooney's post on http://www.dragcoverage.com and to my surprise the two of you got the old corvette back together and took home the Win. Call it Karma or whatever, but that old corvette does not want to go anywhere but back in the winner's circle.
My Hat is off to you guys for your resolve and a great win at Steele, Al.

Way to go Johnny Pilcher on the 3:95 pass and setting the DixieProMod Racing Association's Record.

Due to Edmund Hall & Boo Baxley both breaking and not being able to make the first round of eliminations, the entire field of cars were moved up the qualifying ladder. Additionally, the next two alternates also were broken so the field went to the third alternate, Lynne Milner Baxley.

1st Round of Elimination

The first pair out were the #4 qualifer Parker /Wallace taking on the #5 qualifer Ralph Edelen. Both drivers were identical on the tree. Parker driving Phil Wallace's camaro took the right lane and went on to win the first round of the 2009 season running a winning E.T. of 4.29@164.32 to Edelen's losing E.T of 4.32@168.58

The second pair out were #3 Hancock taking on #6 J.Thomas / Sandufer. Hancock took the right lane and both cars were even off the starting line. The drivers did a great driving job as both cars started moving around about half track. J.Thomas / Sandufer got to the finish line first for the win running a winning E.T. of 4.27@166.54 to Hancock's losing E.T. of 4.30@164.92

The third pair out were the #2 qualifier K.Baker in the right lane taking on the #7 qualifier Sisk. Sisk took the advantage on the tree with a .415 light; however, that was not enough to hang on to the fast charging K.Baker who got to the finish line first running a winning E.T. of 4.11@179.10 to Sisk's losing E.T. of 4.52@144.24 (Sisk had the best light of the race)

The final pair out for the first round were #1 qualifer J.Pilcher taking on #8 Qualifier Milner/Baxley. J.Pilcher had lane choice and went to the right lane and took the win as Milner / Baxley's car rolled through the lights while staging turning on the red light. J.Pilcher needed all the help he could get because as he left the line the car went into tire shake and got loose. Pilcher ran a winning E.T. of 7.56@65.22 to Milner /Baxley's losing E.T. of 6.71@96.15

2nd Round of Elimination

The first pair out in the second round were Parker /Wallace with lane choice going to the right lane taking on J.Pilcher. J.Pilcher took the advantage on the tree and the win running a winning E.T. of 4.13@167.95 to Parker /Wallace's losing E.T. of 4.27@166.78

The last pair out were K.Baker with lane choice in the right lane taking on J.Thomas /Sandufer. Both drivers were dead even on the tree with K.Baker taking the win running an E.T. of 4.11@180.00 over J.Thomas /Sandufer who lost with his best E.T. of the night running a losing E.T. of 4.22@167.95

Final Round

This was to be the closest race of the night. K.Baker with lane choice went to the right lane and J.Pilcher went to the inside tower lane. K.Baker took the advantage on the tree and never looked back running a winning E.T. of 4.09@ 180.55 to a tire shaking J.Pilcher who ran a loosing E.T. of 5:88. Congrats go out to the Baker's and all of their team for the first win of the 2009 DixieProMod Racing season.

To the Phenix City track guys (Fred, Brian and Crew) you did a great job keeping the cars and different classes running one after another. The track was well prepared and the DixieProMods were glad to do business with Phenix City, Dragstrip!

Norm Thomas re-elected President for 2009 at Season Ending Meeting

Norman Thomas was re-elected to serve as the president of the DixieProMod Association for the year 2009.

Dan Parker driving for Bill George won the driver's points championship award for the 2008 season. Chris Patrick was the runner-up.

Brainerd last weekend 2007!

Looking at their web site today and did I see Dixie representing? I saw faces and cars that bring back memories of southeastern drag way.Sure miss that. You guys filled a void of fuel and rubber burning. {man I loved that smell}I grew up watching grudge races at yellow river and covington drag way. Don Nicholson , The Farmer,Phil Bonner, The Platt brothers, boy were those the days. You know that is what you guys are keeping alive that passion,of putting the hammer down wide open gettin-it.Hope the nitrous guys and made us proud!!! Maybe we'll meet up again down the road! Good luck to you guys Wish I had the money to open my own 1/8 track in north Ga.that would be cool.

Dixie Heritage

Over the years, there has been some truly unique individuals and racecars associated with Dixie. During the years I have been around Dixie, few if any, stand out more than Ellis Milner. Following are just a few of Ellis's memories which I've pried from him, mostly aimed at what it was like when he first started racing. Ellis's first trip down a dragsstrip was in 1957. His race car that day was a fenderless Model A Ford powered either by a 1954 or 55 Oldsmobile V-8, topped off with a factory single 4-barrel carb. He ran at the old dragstrip in Montgomery, Alabama (not the current Montgomery track). The track was neither a quarter or an eighth mile - but an intermediate 1,000 feet long. There were no ET clocks, and a flagman started each pair of cars down the track, since even the Christmas Tree had yet to come into use (which was during the early 1960's). Since there were no ET clocks, Miles Per Hour ran during the pass was the competition standard of the day. (MPH was figured using a stopwatch). Though he remembers outrunning some cars that day, Ellis believes his best pass was @ 78 MPH. He laughlingly remembers a 550 Chevy in attendance that day, which kicked my butt, with a 81 MPH Blast. Out of at least a thousand or so, here are just a few other assorted Ellis Milner tidbits: He attended and raced at US-19 Dragway (Albany, Ga) the very first day the track opened, which was on Labor Day weekend, in 1960. The first trophy he won was at US-19 Dragway (Albany, Ga). The first money he won in racing, was by winning Little Eliminator at Phenix City, AL, in 1962 He received $20 and a trophy for his win. The first time he staged up against a Christmas Tree, was at US-19 Dragway (Albany, Ga) in 1963. In late 1962, he bought a complete, brand new Chev 327 Fuelie shortblock, from a dealer for either $225 or $230. He financed the shortblock through GMAC, and remembers the payments were $15 per month. He says in the old days, the Phenix City track was a dirt dragstrip. Though he's not positive, he believes the track was not paved until around 1962. He thinks he probably won a couple hundred trophies racing in the early years. He sometimes sold the trophies back to the tracks for $5 each, just to get gas money for towing home. Among the many cars he's owned and raced through the years were: a rare 1963 Z-11 427 Chevy factory car. Also a 64 Mopar with a 426 Hemi & aluminum frontend. He says the Hemi broke so many expensive parts, that it almost forced him to have to give up racing at the time. He's not entirely sure, but believes Dixie was started in either 1966 or 1968. He says from about 69 into the early 70's era, the association was called Dixie Ultra Stock, before they were re-named the Dixie Pro Stock Racing Association. He believes the original Dixie booking fee to the tracks was $300. Though he's not positive, he thinks the race winner was paid $150, runner-up, $75, 3rd paid $50 & 4th $25. He says our current Dixie booking fee to the tracks, has been the same amount since1998. He believes the first Dixie car to run nitrous (that he was aware of) was Butch McCloud in 1986. Though he says he later found out there probably were others, but they didn't admit it freely & had it hidden away. Well, thats just a few of the tidbits I've gleaned from Ellis. There's of course, probably a thousand more - but I had no intention of trying to write a book here. Of the older members still around, Billy Pilcher probably also has some great Dixie stories and tidbits tucked away in his head . I have always felt priviledged just to get to race with those guys. To you younger members, I'd advise you to talk with the older Dixie members whenever you have the opportunity. Besides being interesting as all get out, you might be surprised at what you might learn. In closing, I just wanted to say a few words about the older members - the members who originally built Dixie. Without them, there would be no Dixie. And realistically, Dixie is the only reason I and others have been able to race a Pro Mod car in this area, for years. I sincerely thank them, for that. James Duncan
